What is the Calcutta Regatta?
If the rumors are true, it just might be the most fun you will have on the dock all summer. VERY popular at Columbia more than 30 years ago, adult members race one another aboard the Club’s Optimist Prams. Spectators bet on who will win ... and who will not! There are no rules, which means pretty much anything goes in the race to cross the finish line first. Legend has it that race prep included plenty of festive beverages, which naturally enhanced “creativity” in racing strategy. This year, our very own Captain’s Lager will be on tap, along with a full bar on the dock throughout the festivities. Racing takes place between our dock, the sea wall and Abby’s port bow – a very short course suitable for all skill levels. Wagering on teams in a variety of categories (in the form of $1 raffle tickets) benefits the Columbia Sailing School. Plus, all who wager are eligible for raffle prizes! KEEP IN MIND: • Registration is required. $25-per-team entry fee includes Calcutta Regatta burgees for all team members. Race-day registration accepted based on availability • Teams consist of one or more members. All team members must start and finish with the boat (meaning, for example, you may get out and swim to move the boat faster if you feel that's the best way to win) • Wagering takes place on the dock, and spectator participation and heckling is encouraged!
